Our Summer Placements provide a network of high-quality training opportunities across the UK. The 10 week placements start in mid June each year and are open to university degree students in the penultimate year of study. This is a chance to build your commercial acumen and technical expertise through practical, first-hand experience in the front line of our business operations. You can also apply for our Graduate Programmes on completion of your Summer Placement.

You’ll be part of our trainee community, sharing information and building your network across the company. To apply, you must be expected to achieve a 2:2 or higher in your degree, and hold five GCSEs Grade A-C (inc. English and Maths) or equivalent. A driving licence and transport is essential. We are looking for good communicators and problem solvers that work well as part of a team. In return you’ll receive a salary of £17,500 pro-rata and benefits package.

Contract Logistics

Kuehne + Nagel is one of the world’s leading contract logistics service providers, with more than seven million square metres of warehouse and logistics space under management, across more than 65 countries. Our UK team covers four key vertical sectors – Technology, Consumer & Retail, Drinks and Defence Logistics. Supporting some of our largest contracts you’ll have the chance to learn all about Warehouse Operations, Transport Operations and Inventory Management. Placements typically exist in Derby, Birmingham, Manchester, Milton Keynes, or Wellingborough. You should have an interest in logistics, strong interpersonal and communication skills and demonstrable experience working in teams.

International Freight Forwarding

  • Airfreight

    We’re the world’s second largest airfreight forwarder, working 24/7 on behalf of our customers. You’ll be joining a team handling over 1.1 million tons of customer products annually, offering a full range of air logistics solutions using our ground-breaking information management systems.

    Our team work hard to consistently exceed customers’ expectations and during your placement you’ll have exposure to transport, warehousing and import & export airfreight. You should have good interpersonal and communication skills, good self-awareness and have a strong customer service ethos.

  • Seafreight

    We’re the number one global seafreight operator and the UK is one of the cornerstones of our Global Sea Logistics Product, accounting for almost 20% of the overall Kuehne + Nagel seafreight volume. We offer a diverse range of solutions for a wide range of customer needs, including Drinks, SRM, Reefer, Retail Solutions and Less than container load.  As part of the team you’ll acquire great experience in how seafreight works, learning about our different products, the sales engagement process, understand our customers’ expectations, trade and route management, and import and export management. You should have good interpersonal and communication skills, good self-awareness and have a strong customer service ethos.

  • International Road Logistics

    Providing pioneering logistics solutions for some of the world’s largest and best-known companies, we provide European road transport services to over 5,000 customers, delivering in excess of 1 million consignments annually. Our placement provides the opportunity to gain both operational and commercial experience working with our Transport & Trailer Operations and Sales teams. You should have good interpersonal skills and the ability to analyse data using Microsoft Excel. Fluency in an additional European language would be beneficial to your application.

Working locally with the individual branches, nationally across the UK network and globally with our colleagues across the world, our experts in Finance, HR, Marketing and Customer Excellence play a vital role in delivering our business objectives and providing an exceptional quality of service to our customers.

  • Finance

    Finance has a multi-faceted role providing internal systems for recording, reporting, controlling, audit and preparation of financial information, annual targets and forecasts. We also promote accountability and discipline in accounting, managing capital expenditure and controlling working capital. You’ll gain broad experience and understanding of the ‘basic building blocks’ of central finance operations, including Accounts Payable, Accounts Receivable, General Ledger Finance and Financial Reporting. You’ll also begin to understand the wider finance environment and interactions between finance and other departments. You should have strong interpersonal and numeracy skills, with a good working knowledge of spreadsheets.

  • HR

    Our HR Business Partners and Specialist teams such as Resourcing, Development and Reward work alongside each of our business functions, supporting the implementation of our business strategy and driving continued growth. You’ll be given an insight into the HR function and activities, specifically learning about the attraction, selection and development of our people. There’ll also be opportunities to work on projects to improve business processes and promote employee engagement. You should have strong interpersonal skills and an interest in learning about HR in an operational environment.

  • Marketing

Our Marketing team support the business in building up this trust, which is key for gaining new customers as well as for strengthening current relationships. As a summer placement in our team you’ll see how we do this as we; provide Market Intelligence to get a profound understanding of the market place, business drivers and trends, competition, and our customer’s needs; produce marketing material, tools, services and campaigns to support our strategic focus areas; develop standards and guidelines to ensure we send out consistent, on-brand messages to our customers. Candidates should have a relevant degree or work experience, and a high level of literacy.

  • Customer Excellence

    Our Customer Excellence Management team is a brand new development for Kuehne + Nagel, focused on ensuring that as a business we consistently do the right things and do them right first time to deliver continued excellence and service quality to our customers. We work with some of our largest accounts, analysing trends, forecasted requirements and performance data, to identify ways in which we can add more value, save money and keep delivering our excellent service. During the placement you will support the team in sharing best practice as they innovate and provide valuable data and advice essential to the long-term retention of our customers. You should have strong communication skills, both verbal and written with experience of using Microsoft PowerPoint. You should also be adept at using Microsoft Excel to process and analyst large amounts of data.
